Ronny Delrue thinks like he draws and draws like he thinks. In a sense, he attempts to reconstruct himself, and his view of the world, on paper. Innumerable sketches, notes, doodles, paintings, obsessively detailed drawings and manipulated or drawn-on photos form a ceaseless flow of thoughts in which Delrue reflects both on personal experiences, and contemporary social themes.
The exhibition ‘J’essaye de me reconstruire’ offers an extraordinary glimpse into the mind of the artist with a selection of themed drawing series accompanied by dozens of diary notes. Drawings in which states of awareness such as memory and imagination, and the tension between rationality and feeling and their control and loss, play a vital role. The intentional use of brief instances when control is lost, generates astounding new results, and often the best work. Controlling the uncontrolled fascinates Delrue to such an extent that he made it the subject of a research project, which led to the creation of a Ph.D. in the arts.
The solo ‘J’essaye de me reconstruire’ is also part of the longstanding research project ‘Drawing is Thinking, Thinking is Moving’ of the LUCA School of Arts Faculty of KU Leuven, with research partners CIAP Hasselt, S.M.A.K. Gent and Drawing Centre Diepenheim.
